Invisible Ink

On the whole, the restricted section of the library was fairly well-behaved, despite the high concentration of occult texts leaking magical residue all over the place. Oh, sure, they occasionally had a bit of trouble with the anthropomorphised books suddenly discovering their feral side, and the odd student might experience some temporal eyeball displacement if they were particularly unlucky, but for the most part, Madam Pince kept the place under control.

But for the last few days she’d been on a brief sabbatical to the Hay on Wye book festival, and had left her precious library in the hands of a considerably less experienced assistant who’d hoped - rather naively, Minerva thought – that the growing black spot on the third tile from the left of the restricted entrance would just go away by itself.

And that was how Minerva and Donald came to be standing on either side of a pit several feet wide on a Saturday morning, watching a barnacle-smattered tentacle grope curiously around the perimeter of the portal.

"Well," said Minerva, side-stepping its advances with a severe expression. "This won't do."

"I know. I was going to have calamari for dinner, now it just doesn't feel right." Donald replied as he stood next to the headmistress, dressed in his casual attire which still seemed somewhat formal. A dark velvet jacket with blue lining on the inside, a simple white shirt and pair of casual slacks. But due the dripping tentacle, it made him wish he'd warn an apron of some kind.

"Could it be a portal of some kind, linking to the black lake? Though last I checked, Geoff kept his tentacles clean." Donald was of course referring to the giant Squid in the great Lake which he'd named a few years back. He held out his wand and ever so gently as the large tentacle poked closer to the duo, taped the tip of the curious appendage.

Her mouth formed the word Geoff silently, before wrinkling up as though she'd stuffed a lemon in it. "I...believe we may be looking at an octopus, rather than a squid," she observed. Minerva had had the dubious pleasure of an octopus animagus as a student once, and was thusly well-versed in their subtle differences. "But I think we can safely assume that this is indeed a portal. The question is, how do we close it?"

The tentacle curled around Donald's wand at the slight provocation, and slooooowly began to pull at it.

Donald held back a small smei serious comment about having Filtch mop it up. He had to remain some what professional, this was after all, the restricted section. Who knows what sinister things could be unleashed upon the school if it was compromised?

Mallory gently tugged his wand back, the slick appendage dabbing about the air for it. "Before we do." Donald spoke as he pulled out a small vial and popped the cork. "Perhaps Horris could tell us the substance. At last check, simple mold didn't just create a spacial portal for creatures to spew out of." The dark water successfully contained he popped the cork back in. "Always best to be prepared. And how do we close it, without doing the poor thing harm?" Hr wasn't about to get on the care for magical creature's hit list.

"Horace had to leave early for St Mungo's this morning," Minerva told him. "Accompanying a student who drank a pint of Confusing Concoction for a dare and now can't find his own face with both hands and a map." She didn't sound impressed. "We'll take a sample for him though," she suggested, conjuring a beaker from thin air and offering it to Donald. "If you'd like to do the honours."

"of course, don't want to get your glad rags damp." He spoke as he took the beaker from thin air and poured the fluid into the container. "That wasn't Westaby by any chance, was it?" He as he placed the beaker further back from the open portal, the tentacle still roaming around the area, slapping against the ground now and again. "It's very determined." he spoke rather unhelpfully. "So we have mould, a large appendage and strange black fluid." He began to hold his chin, trying to think of anything that could link the three factors. Again the tentacle went exploring, this time heading, with great curiosity towards Minerva

“It’s always Westaby,” she sighed, watching him collect the sample before she switched her attention to the encroaching tentacle. Rather than move away, she simply raised her wand and shot a stream of light at it. “Immobulus.

The tentacle froze on place thanks to the spell. "Well that's one way around it. But how do we get the thing away? Oh we could shrink it!" He spoke with glee at the sudden spark of inspiration he'd drawn from his own living quarters. "Cmon it'll be easy." The cheeky grin remaining ever present on his aged face.

Her brows arched. "And once we've shrunk the eldritch horror, are you planning to keep it as a pet?" she asked, clearly suspicious of his motives by the glee on his face.

Donald removed his smile. "You know me Minerva, that'd be against the rules." She probably did, which was probably why she was passively aggressively warning him not to take it as a pet under any circumstances. Geoff could always use a friend though...

But no, the Headmistress was right, This was an inconvenience and he didn't need the students getting all excited, they'd be murder to deal with otherwise. "We'll shrink it for a time, so we don't get any tentacles flailing out of whatever this black pool is, so we can work on mopping it up. I think that works."

She was almost afraid she'd given him ideas; one Hagrid was quite enough on the premises after all. That, and Minerva wasn't sure about the longevity of the average shrinking charm. It'd be just their luck for it to resize in the middle of a lesson and break some kind of logical space continuum.

"Right then," she said brusquely. "I'll shield, you try it on a tentacle. That way, if anything explodes, it won't harm the books."

And the books wouldn't harm them, with any luck.

Donald gave a curt nod and drew his wand on the curious, barnacle covered tentacle. With a swift motion, a simple shrinking spell was cast out, light sparks flying forward as the hit the large appendage which quickly began to wither and shrink down to a diminutive size. It was harmless he was sure of it.

So when three other large tentacles rose up seemingly in anger and began to dart forward at the Professor, he hadn't the faintest idea why. He moved out of the way of one before the second managed to wrap around his waist. "I'll be right back." He said quickly before being pulling into the inky black abyss with a 'plop'.

"Don't you know those are cursed last words?" Minerva hollered after him as he disappeared, her angry Scottish brogue possibly the last thing he might ever hear as he was dragged into whatever alternate dimension had spawned forth from the rogue magic.

Left alone with the angry black puddle, she pointed her wand down into it. "You give him back right now," she told the tentacle monster sharply. "Accio Professor Mallory!"

There was an odd blurp from within the abyss, followed by gurgling as if all the water was being drained out of a sink. The blackness began to recede until more tentacles were visible, followed by a single, bulbous yellow eye.

The sound of Professor Mallory giving out a few angry swear words in a powerful Glaswegian accent could be heard as the large puddle was drained and Donald pulled out by the powerful spell, landing on the side with a thump, drenched in water and some sort of green/yellow gunk. "I almost had that!" If by had he meant nearly consumed by the monster, then yes, yes he really did.

"It's nothing I can't place in fantastic beasts, best thing to do is close the hole, Maybe put up a sign or something." From below a gurgling raw echoed out and around the library. His shrinking idea was still tenable, but it may be time consuming so closing the hole was the next best thing he could come up with, provided Minerva didn't have a cunning and clever plan to get them out of this mess.
