Waking the Dead

Postby Astrid Macmillan » Tue Mar 28, 2017 8:54 am

In the last week, burn accounts all over Witchster had been churning out viral shaky-cam videos of single inferi being let loose on muggles. There had been reports from several countries, including America and Australia, where the phenomenon - a dangerous precursor to the creepy clown prank - was eliciting a response that swung between hysterical and hostile.

It was about twenty minutes before clocking off time when Harry Potter and Abigail Eaton received urgent memos to meet Astrid in the transport department. When they got there, she was pacing back and forth in front of the desk of some poor, overworked operative who was hunched over a cheap plastic whistle, trying to concentrate on turning it into a functioning portkey and occasionally shooting her nervous looks.

Astrid herself was watching something on one of the MLE department's encrypted protobooks. "There's been another spate of inferi attacks," she told the duo as they arrived. "This one's streaming live right now - we've narrowed it down to a few mile radius in Brighton, but you're going to have to act fast to catch these guys."

She turned the device towards them. On the screen, several teenagers were running shrieking through a park. They saw one try to hurdle a bench, but his foot got caught between the slats and he crash landed only to be set on by a lurching, rotting figure shortly after.

Shuddering, Astrid shoved the protobook at Harry and the completed portkey at Abigail. "Please hurry!"

Abigail hadn't worked with the famous Harry Potter before, but there was no time to really think about it as Astrid gave them their assignment. She grimaced at the image the protobook presented, reaching for the portkey when it was handed over.

"Ready?" She asked Harry, holding it out for him to touch. With her free hand, she got her wand out, because this was likely going to be a fight and she wanted to be prepared.

The last thing Harry needed, was to be filmed/photographed/recorded or anything of the like while on the job. So when he and a Hitwizard he'd seen about the office once or twice called Abigail caught the Inferi case, Harry found himself dreading the prospect should they have to undo the whole situation while being filmed.

He arrived at the desk, prepped and Glasses fixed, this time they weren't getting smashed. "Always." He replied simply as he took hold of the Portkey, and the duo were warped away. Harry staggered into reality, Wand swiftly drawn as he survived the area. The bench from the film was there, but no muggle or Inferi, only a shoe. "Damn it. See anything?" He said as he cast out Lumos on the poorly lit street.

"Not yet," Abby said, frowning as she squinted into the darkness. She walked over to the bench and picked up the shoe, as if it might tell her where they'd gone. No such luck as a shoe was just a shoe after all.

"Let's try this way," she suggested, the direction the person had been attempting to run in when the inferi had intercepted him.

Harry followed the Sniper's lead, defaulting to her experience. When it came to the high profile cases, then he was in his element, rushing to prevent a dangerous situation from going nuclear was all in the Hitwizard's department. As they followed the projected rout, the two found nothing of note. No cries or danger flung at them..yet. "Remind me why people think this is funny?" He spoke aloud, the lumos charm getting brighter as he homed in on a path into a small patch of trees. Perhaps that way?

She gave a little shudder.

"I've no idea, honestly," she said. "It's mystifying to me why some wizards feel the need to torment muggles." She paused, shining the light of her wand down the path. Nothing, but they couldn't see that far down it. "But then, I'm muggleborn, so I suppose it's no surprise that I don't see the humor." She headed down the path, assuming he'd follow.

"yeah, join the club." He replied with eyes set dead upon the path. "It's a power trip I think. People like being strong-" He was cut off as from the bushes was a loud and pained wail. He span around, wand pointed directed at where the sound came from. Nothing else followed besides the sounds of the night. A broken twig, a stray bird...nothing more.

"What's your specialism again?" He asked, his voice calm and steely, despite the bead of sweat slithering down his cheek.

She spun after him, her eyes searching out anything in the darkness.

"Sniper," she said. "Usually I'm more of a lie in wait sort of person," she admitted. "But my aim with a wand is impeccable. If we can find it, I can neutralize it." Hopefully. She heard the rustle of leaves from further into the bushes, behind them now, and she'd spoken too soon -- the inferi was on her before she could even think to stun it. She barely had time to scream as it knocked her down.

"We should play to our strengths. I'll draw it out, and when you have the shot, take i-"

"REEEEEEORRCH!" The infernal thing was upon them, landing atop Abigail in a clumbsy fashion, sickly limbs thrashing about as it's rotten face decided to dive down upon the Hitwizard!

"Flipendo!" a blue spark exploded out of his wand and collided with the Inferi, knocking it off the woman before Harry gripped her shoulder and pulled her back further from the flung corpse. "Take the shot!"

The inferi had been knocked down, but it was shambling to its feet as Abigail fumbled with her wand; she definitely wasn't giving a great testament to her competency thus far.

"Petrificus totalus!" She called, and her aim was true, hitting the inferi and knocking it backward. She couldn't kill it, being that it was already dead, so she settled for an attempt to incapacitate it. She then sent a series of ropes from her wand to wind around it tightly. "Do we want to bring it back for ... well, I don't know if we can interrogate it, but testing of some sort? Or we can simply destroy it." Sure, avada kedavra wouldn't work, but there were other ways.

Harry's eye's went wide as she fumbled for the wand, slightly worried that the surprise ambush was getting to her nerves. However Abigail pulled through with great success, not only stunning the corpse but binding to tightly to prevent any further....difficulty. "I'll have to remember that one." He'd never had much experience with these creatures besides the ordeal in the cave, and stunning was much more friendly to the environment than a bonfire <.<

"I'd rather we try and find the Witch or Wizard whose doing it. But yeah, destroy it. It's ruined enough people's nights." He spoke as he continued to look around, wondering if the Witch or Wizard who'd let the bloody thing loose was in the surrounding area. "If they used it as an distraction, Where the hell would they run to? More Importantly, where could they get a good view of it all? If you were wanting to get the perfect view of this area Abigail, Where would you go?" She was a Sniper so his logic followed that she'd be a really good person to ask about vantage points.

Unfortunately, a bonfire was pretty much the only way to be rid of this thing, but Abigail had been around enough to know how to work a closed one, encasing the suddenly flaming inferi in an invisible barrier. She watched until it was ash, just in case.

"Hmm," she said, turning her attention to scout the area, her gaze automatically sweeping upward. "The higher up you are, the more you can see, but you'd want to be close enough to take the videos. Is there a way for us to watch those again?" They'd be able to tell if they were usually filmed from higher ground or not, which might at least give her a starting point.

Harry watched the inferi was cremated in the contained bubble, the creature crumbling into ash on the damp ground. "Not if you got a P-Book." He said glumly. "OK so we can't have missed them by much, 5 minutes tops. We should put out a note to any patrol officers in the area, it'll be easier with more boots on the ground, right?" He rubbed the side of his head, thinking hard at what the two of them had at their disposal.

Sadly all he could come up with was "spread out" which you never wanted to do when dealing with a dark wizard with a talent for necromancy. "we could try and trace the Inferni's steps? That'll lead somewhere right?"

"Sadly, I do not have a p-book," Abby said. She'd been thinking about getting one, but she hadn't gotten around to it. "More boots on the ground is a good idea though, let me see. I do have a mirror," she said, pulling a compact out of her pocket and flipping it open. It went back to dispatch, where she got Demi. She asked her to spread the word among the patrol units in the area and then clicked the mirror closed and tucked it away.

"Okay," she said, once that was done. "Let's see if we can figure out where this thing came from." She had her wand at the ready as she started in the direction from which the inferi had come. "Keep your eyes peeled for anything weird."

Re: Waking the Dead

He gave a grateful sigh as something went their way this evening. Thank god for magic mirrors. With the area clear of any more magical monsters, Harry also kept his Wand at the ready as he cast out lumos. "Here we go, footprints." he pointed to faint indentations on the ground where the lumbering corpse had lurched and stumbled about it's way. They were difficult to track but what little that could be followed lead them from the small grass area and onto a muddy path.

It split apart down several routs, with very little evidence of any other life being about. Even from the owner of the missing shoe, which didn't bode well for anyone. "We need to find the muggle in the film as well. I don't like leaving him in the wind." Again more work to be done by two people. The Ministry should really start using teams instead of partners, Harry thought.

She'd been concentrating on the tracks, making them out in the mud was more difficult than if it were a bit drier, but she was still paying attention. She glanced up and nodded.

"Right, at the very least he needs to be obliviated." She paused. "I'm shit at oblivation though, how are you at it? Though I suppose we can call in a professional when we get to that point."

"Nothing on a professional level, but I get the job done." At least he thought he did. "And I'd rather we didn't, with the way things are going..." Don't say it, don't say it, don't say it! "We'd end up with Malfoy and I don't think he and I make for a good working environment." Greeeat. Way to get over the school rivalry and be the adult.

Finally, after what felt like an age, Harry heard a whimper. Off in a ditch, he saw a socked foot lying up, un-moving. "Oh no..." His mind went to a dark place, an unmoving foot somehow forced him to leap to a dead muggle which was an escalation of the highest order. Never mind the whimpering suggested the victim was indeed alive. Harry found himself sliding down into the ditch where the young man from the video was upside down, cold and groaning. So he was alive.

"He's going to need a hospital." Harry spoke quietly. "Z-zzobie." The poor traumatised muggle stuttered out. As law enforcement, their job was to focus on keeping the whole wizarding world under wraps, but at this time, Harry was more focused on keeping their only witness alive.

She didn't actually know much about the Harry/Draco rivalry, being nearly a decade older than them, but she did know Lucius so she made a face automatically. She didn't have the chance to say anything about it though, which was perhaps a blessing, when they heard the sound. She followed Harry, picking her way down after him a bit slower, seeing that the victim was alive.

"I don't think we can bring him to St. Mungo's," she said. "Let me do a quick healing spell to stabilize him and give us time to figure out what to do with him next." She tugged her wand out and concentrated -- healing was difficult at the best of times. She murmured the spell and then peeked at the victim. "Did that work?"

Harry fought the urge to shrug since this was not a good time to loose his cool. Healing spells were bloody aweful to do for him which is why he seemed to always be bruised and/or covered in blood. But the wave of Abigail's wand seemed to have some effect as the man's breathing calmed down and, just as his eyes saw the bite mark on his shoulder, healed it up just enough to not be fatal, leaving him with a mark but not much else. "Good enough. Hey...mate. The thing you saw, we saw it too, crazy right? Did you see anyone else with it?" Nice and tactful as always.

It took a few minutes but the Auror managed to build up something of a rapport with the victim before they finally got to the information they needed desperately. "There...there was a guy in like...robes or somethin who ran off down to the end of the park, before the..the thing... Oh Christ it was horrible."

Occasionally, Harry found himself at odds with removing memories from people. The very idea that someone could tampered with his most intimate thoughts, removed an experience or event, could profoundly change a person at their core. It was a down right ethical nightmare which is why he never thought about it too much. But in this instance, his wand drawn and pointing at the unfortunate victim, he didn't feel as bad. "Obliviate." he spoke softly as his wand's tip lit up gently and the stressed, panicked features of Mr Nole Clark relaxed into a complacent, and a little confused look. "You had a fall there mate. Gotta watch that night jogging. Stay safe yeah?" Nole nodded before getting up and wandering away.

"You heard him, south."

"Good job with him," Abigail said. She'd let him handle it without interference, both because it was good for the younger aurors to get practice and because he was doing just fine on his own. The hapless muggle seemed a little confused when they released him into the wild, as it were, but he'd given them enough information to get moving in the right direction.

She started in that direction, her wand drawn, eyes peeled ahead of them. "And good obliviation. I know it's ... well, we don't always like to do it, but sometimes it's necessary, and that poor bloke will be better off for it, certainly."
