The Ministry of Magic

The Ministry of Magic (or The Ministry) is the main governing body of the magical community of Great Britain. Along with the task of keeping the wizarding population hidden from Muggles (non magical folk) the primary purpose of the Ministry is the preservation of magical law. It is headed by the Minister for Magic.

Oracle Mall

Oracle Mall is the located on the ground floor of the Ministry and serves as its muggle front. The mall’s owner and managerial staff are aware of magic’s existence and work closely with representatives from the Muggle Liaison office to ensure everything runs smoothly. However, many of the muggle workers in the ground level are unaware of magic’s existence.

Ministry Mews

MINISTRY LAYOUT

More than twenty service lifts stop at each floor on Levels One through Nine. Stairways also provide access to all ten levels in the Ministry and are the only means of accessing Level Ten. As the entire Ministry is underground, the higher floor number indicates levels deeper underground.

With the exception of Level Eight (the Atrium), each level of the ministry is set up in a similar manner - the lifts open into a long corridor containing windows magically enchanted by Magical Maintenance that show changing outside views.

THE ATRIUM

Entering the Ministry

The headquarters of the Ministry are in Whitehall, in central London, deep underground.

The visitor's entrance of the Ministry of Magic is an abandoned red telephone phone booth; one enters the Ministry by dialing "62442" ("magic"). Following the prompts of the operator, passes are issued and the telephone box will descend through the ground into the Atrium (Level Eight).

Employees and Ministry officials may once again apparate into the Ministry and/or connect their homes, via the Floo Network, to the twenty fireplaces in the Atrium.

The public lavatory entrances also remain open as an option for witches or wizards already employed at the the Ministry to enter. Using a token, employees can open the lavatory booth, step into the bowl, and pull the chain. The employee enters the Ministry via the fireplaces in the Atrium. This is the least used method of entrance, not only due to the fact that it's less convenient than floo or apparition, but also because of the stigma of the Time We Don't Talk About.

Atrium Description

The Atrium is a wide open space, grand in design, with magical windows providing light and views. It is the worker entrance to the building it, and on this level the department of Magical Maintenance, the Ministry Munchies Cafe, and the on-site St. Mungo's satellite clinic can be found.

Administration Department

    Administration Department Job List

The Administration Department is located on Level One of the Ministry. It is comprised of the Minister for Magic, the highest position in the Ministry, and his staff, which assist in the daily administration of the wizarding world in Great Britain.

The executive corridor has thick, purple carpet, gleaming wooden doors with small plaques with the owner's name and job title. Administrative area is an open space with a dozen or so small but highly polished desk in rows. It is the poshest level of the Ministry, with nicer carpeting and higher quality wood used for the doors and desks.

Department of Magical Transportation Job List

The Department of Magical Transportation is responsible for various aspects of magical transport. It is located on the sixth level of the Ministry of Magic

This floor is covered in a fine green film of floo powder, and every available surface appears to be covered in junk. At least once a week a member of this department is accidentally sent across the country due bumping up against a seemingly innocuous object, such as an old hat, that is actually a live port key. As such, all members of this department are required to be licensed to apparate so they can't use "port keyed to Little Whinging" as an excuse to take the day off.

Division of Magical Education

Division of Magical Education Job List

The Division of Magical Education is a branch of the Ministry of Magic. The distinction between this division and the other full departments appears to be in name only. Located on Level Seven, the members of this division share the floor with the Department of Magical Games and Sports.

In stark contract to the Department of Magical Games and Sports, the left side of the level seven corridor is a tidy hall, lined with educational posters as well as doors to the various offices. Members if this division prefer calm and quiet, something that is in short supply considering who they share a floor with. Dirty looks and slammed doors are not an uncommon occurrence in the DoME.

Magical Maintenance and Support Staff Department Job List

Magical Maintenance was a division of the Ministry of Magic. While officially labeled a department, this area functions more like an office or a division. Their offices are located on Level Eight, on the far end of the Atrium past the security desk.

Members of this Department are the custodians of the Ministry. They are responsible for maintaining the upkeep of the Ministry, including deciding what weather to display through the Ministry's enchanted windows and repairing magic gone wrong within the premises of the Ministry.

In addition to the office for the head of the department and an open area with desks for the support staff, various broom cupboards and utility closets are located throughout the Ministry headquarters.

Spoiler: Department of Mysteries show
Department of Mysteries

    Department of Mysteries Job List

The Department of Mysteries is a section of the Ministry of Magic that carries out confidential research. Most of its operations are carried out in total secrecy. Few wizards within the Ministry actually know what is located within this department. Those wizards who work in the Department of Mysteries are known as Unspeakables because of the confidential nature of their work.

On Level Nine, the walls are bare and there are no windows on the wall and no doors apart from a plain black on set at the very end of the corridor. Unauthorized personnel are not allowed in this department and the offices are designed to disorient those who should not be there.

EMPLOYEE CODE OF CONDUCT

This is a section from the Ministry of Magic's official code of conduct. Note that what's written in the CoC and what actually happens in the Ministry are two different things. Any complaints about characters violating the CoC are made IC, and the repercussions are handled IC.

MINISTRY OF MAGIC
Official Code of Conduct

Dress Standard
All Ministry employees should dress presentably in business or business casual wear. Department-specific robes should be neat and relatively clean. Any clothing or hairstyle that may distract from a harmonious, productive workplace environment is prohibited.

Drugs, Alcohol, & Tobacco
Smoking is not allowed inside the Ministry of Magic Headquarters building. Employees who arrive to work under the influence of illegal drugs, potions, or alcohol will be disciplined.

Dating & Fraternization Policy
Regular employees may develop friendships and relationships with one another as long as the relationships do not negatively impact work. Any relationship that interferes with the workplace environment or productivity will be addressed with progressive discipline.

Department heads, managers, and supervisors may not fraternize with anyone who reports directly or indirectly to them as this may be perceived as favoritism, misuse of authority, or sexual harrassment. The fraternization prohibited by this policy includes dating, romantic involvement, and sexual relations. Close friendships are strongly discouraged.

Any manager or supervisor who becomes romantically involved with an employee must inform their manager and Human Resources immediately, who will then decide what actions must be taken. The consequences range from interdepartmental job transfer to employment termination, depending on the severity of the infraction.

Workplace Environment
Employees are expected to maintain a positive workplace environment. Actions that create a hostile environment, such as physical, magical, sexual, psychological, and/or verbal harassment are unacceptable.

Employees are expected to arrive promptly and to work productively. Excessive absences, lateness, malingering, horseplay, wand twiddling, monkey business, and slacking off will be addressed with disciplinary action.
